30k 60k 90k Preventative Car Maintenance Check

30K|60K|90K Scheduled Service Check-Up/Factory Scheduled Maintenance

Understanding what a 30k|60k|90k Service is and why do I always hear about it?

Manufacturers often have routine service schedules applicable based on a vehicle’s age and mileage. Some of the more common intervals recur every 30,000 miles. A 30/60/90K service check up is designed to address maintenance and inspection items applicable to the respective mileage interval. Generally, these items may include filter changes, fluid changes and a comprehensive visual maintenance inspection as well as other items, depending on the specific mileage interval. Most modern vehicles will have received several major service requirements at 90,000 miles. Some however, may not require some of these items (Timing Belts, for example) until the next interval of 120,000 miles or beyond. However, once the major service intervals have been crossed and the required services addressed, the ongoing maintenance schedule reverts to one very similar to the original 30/60/90 schedule, with some exceptions. These exceptions will vary from one vehicle to the next and may also be influenced by other repairs and maintenance that inevitably become more common with high mileage vehicles.

While manufacturer maintenance schedules almost always have service intervals that fall within a 30, 60 or 90,000 mile range (7500, 15,000, 22,500, 75,000etc.), the 30,000 mile intervals are generally accepted as the most common and important. To help ensure vehicle performance and reliability, ALL maintenance intervals must be addressed based on manufacture recommendations and vehicle use.

Frequently Asked Questions

The term car maintenance often implies routine services such as an oil change. This basic service helps protect your engine by ensuring that your oil can always deliver the vital lubricating and cooling properties that your engine needs for operation. At Driver’s Edge, a routine oil change includes performing the following services:

  • Oil change
  • Oil filter change
  • Tire rotation
  • Top off of fluids
  • Visual inspection of parts major components

However, an oil change is not the only type of service that your vehicle will need throughout its lifetime. As your vehicle begins to pack on the miles, other components — like your vehicle’s coolant, battery, and brakes — will also need to be serviced according to your vehicle’s maintenance schedule. This schedule can be found in your owner’s manual. Staying on top of your car’s service intervals can help ward off breakdown and reduce repair costs throughout your vehicle’s lifetime.

The type of car maintenance that your vehicle will need will depend largely on how many miles your vehicle has and what is recommended in your vehicle’s maintenance schedule. While we recommend that you refer to your owner’s manual for your particular vehicle’s maintenance schedule, typical vehicle maintenance looks a bit like this:

Oil Change

  • Conventional oil — every 3,000-5,000 miles
  • High-mileage oil — every 5,000-7,500 miles
  • Full synthetic oil — every 7,500-12,000 miles

Other Components

  • Coolant flush — every three years or 36,000 miles
  • Car battery replacement — every three years or 36,000 miles
  • Power steering flush — every 40,000-80,000 miles
  • Brake fluid flush — every three years or every 45,000 miles
  • Windshield wiper replacement — every 12 months
  • Tire rotation — every 7,500-10,000 miles

The length of time it will take one of our mechanics to perform a 90,000 mile service on your vehicle will depend largely on the required maintenance as specified by your vehicle’s maintenance schedule. While some vehicles will require robust service at the 90,000 mile mark that includes spark plug change, ignition coil replacement, belt replacements and more, other manufacturers will recommend that you hold off on the service until the 100,000-120,000 mile mark.

No matter what type of service your manufacturer calls for, our ASE-certified mechanics can get the job done as quickly as possible to get you back on the road. For the most accurate estimate of how long your particular model’s 90k service will take, we recommend that you reach out to our service center and ask one of our service advisors.

A 60,000 mile service may look different for your vehicle than it would for someone who drives a different model. However, here are the typical services that a 60k mile service will include:

Similar to your 30k service and your 90k service, a 60k mile service largely involves flushing out all of your vehicle’s fluids and performing a visual inspection of major components such as your spark plugs, suspension, as well as your belts and hoses.

While this is a general overview of your vehicle’s service needs, we recommend that you refer to your owner’s manual to determine your vehicle’s particular maintenance and schedule needs. If you are unable to find a copy of your owner’s manual, feel free to reach out to our service advisors for our best advice.
