Can I maintain my car battery myself?

If you’re not a professional but have been under your vehicle’s hood before, you can do simple battery maintenance tasks such as cleaning battery corrosion or tightening the clamps. If you spot white or green chalk around the posts and terminals, give it a good cleaning with an old toothbrush. Secure the fasteners and add a generous amount of dielectric gel to the posts and terminals to prevent corrosion. Replacing a car battery can be complex, even for professionals, and doing it improperly can damage your vehicle. Book a service appointment if you need a car battery replacement.

How long does it take to replace my car battery?

Car battery replacement by a qualified auto mechanic can take as little as 20 to 30 minutes, including the time it takes to reset the onboard computer and register the new car battery.

How to know when my car battery needs a replacement?

If your car is slow to crank or you need a battery jump, it’s time to replace it. More subtle signs like dim headlights, unfamiliar startup sounds, or glitchy doors and windows could also mean your battery is failing. Bring in your vehicle for a free battery check before the battery dies completely.

How to prolong your battery lifespan?

To prolong your car battery’s lifespan, avoid frequent short driving trips as the repeated start, stop, start cycle strains your battery. Turn off lights and unplug accessories like phone chargers when your vehicle is off. The best way to make your car battery last is to keep it charged, either with regular driving or with a trickle charger. A knowledgeable technician can also check your car battery voltage, tighten fasteners, clean corrosion off the battery terminals, and apply anti-corrosion dielectric gel if needed. How do you test a car battery?

Our certified technicians use top-of-the-line testers called conductance testers that test the voltage and amperage as well as the internal resistance of the battery, which identifies how well your battery can conduct electricity. Each test compares the cold cranking amp ratings to the normal operating range specified by your vehicle’s manufacturer. Unless you have the tools and knowledge to do so correctly, it’s recommended to bring in your vehicle for a free battery check.
